Which License Server am I using?

We have multiple license servers set up, and a few of us point to more than one. Any easy way of telling which license server I am using for a session?
Nothing in Help/About
Nothing in the fourms I could find

Actually, DOORS prefers to use the registry entries over the environment variable. However that is not the issue. I have multiple license servers I am pointing to, but I never know which one actually had a free license for me to consume (this is all floating). What I am looking for is a way to query the client to see which license server I am using a license from. I am not the IT Admin, so I do not have access to Flex logs on all servers.
"my" TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE=19353@Flexserver1;19353@Flexserver2;19353@Flexserver3

So, any DXL query? any file that can be looked at?

in my opinion (but perhaps i am wrong), as license servers use flexlm software, and you don't have access to log files, it is not possible.

DOORS uses the 3rd party License Management tool known as FlexNet (formerly FlexLM) - the example you gave of your registry value suggests that FlexNet has been configured as a triple redundant license management system. If the client can't get a license from the first license server it will go to the next one in the list and so on until it can check out a license.

DOORS has no DXL functions to interrogate the FlexNet license servers, this can only be done via command line requests or the so called "lmtools" utility - got to the Flexera web site and search for the FlexNet Admin guide - http://www.flexerasoftware.com/

You can tell which license server provided the license to a given client by interrogating the FlexNet server log files of each of the license servers - each check out entry in these logs identify the network login name of the user (not to be confused with the DOORS user login name), and the name of the host where the request came from (e.g. the name of the PC). However, the log is a text file and full of "stuff" and will require some sophisticated parsing code to pull that specific info out.

There are 3rd party tools that can integrate with the FlexNet license server to deliver reports on license usage, these may also give the info you seek or are customisable to do so. Have a look at the OPenLM offering at http://www.openlm.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1.

So your TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE looks like:
7192@LicenseServer01;19354@DoorsServer02;7192@SomeOtherLicenseServer03.
You figure if 01 is out of licenses, DOORS client will try 02 and finally 03. You want to know which one was chosen this time.

Help >About Help indeed has the information, the...
Support Id: looks like Tnn-999999
Support Password: looks like 104100xnnnnxxxnnxnxn

are derived from the license file used on the license server. So you first need to go to all your license servers to get that information and write it down. Then later you can do About Help to see which one is being used now. You can get that license info from your client by stripping down your TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE to a single port@server and running DOORS and looking at About Help and knowning the Support ID and Password are from that exact server; then try each one in turn, then put them back together.

From a policy standpoint, you may want your Server01 to serve DOORS Admins only and you can restrict licensing for folks in a certain group (as per FlexLM). Normal folks would use only 02. This insures the admins can indeed get in but doesn't take away from the standard licenses, such as if you put 02 in the first slot.

Searched my library of DOORS stuff and found an undocumented DXL function that will give you the info that is displayed in the Help > About dialogue box.

Louie,

very, very clever... are you related to Columbo?

and a resourceful dose of determination to boot...
i settled with and have used the lmtools.exe utility for close to 5 years now,
only need to know a couple of things like port & servername and which buttons to clik.

but i REALLY like to see the other more clever methods for digging into doors configuration items and the typical admin needs, especially like this example.

I agree.... you da man!!!

these are the kind of interesting issues, topics and postings that keep me coming back to the doors forums...

I also get a big kick out of the humor that all the posters build into this site for issues that arise with doors tools, nothing beats being able to laugh at this stuff that keeps us busy every day.

keep smiling...
:)
